In Nevada, a speeding ticket is more than just a fine. It can lead to points on your record and other penalties that can impact your life in various ways.

There are 4 basic speeding laws that all drivers should follow:

1. Do not drive above the posted speed limit
2. Drive at a reasonable speed considering traffic, weather, and highway conditions
3. It is illegal to drive at a speed greater than 80 miles per hour.

If you follow the posted speed limit, you should not receive a speeding ticket in Nevada. Be wary of when you are in school zones, pedestrian safety zones, or construction zones. You must drive 15 miles per hour in a school and pedestrian zone. For a construction zone, there will be a posted reduced speed within the work zone. If you drive above these speed limits, you’ll receive a fine double that of a normal speed violation. For example, if the regular fine is $150 dollars, you’ll receive a $300 fine if you’re speeding in a work zone or school zone. People that drive well beyond the posted limit may also face reckless driving charges.

Should You Fight A Ticket?

If you received a ticket for speeding or a similar moving violation, you have options. Many people assume that simply paying the ticket and moving on is the best course of action, but violations could stay on your record for as long as three years.

Any type of moving violation leads to demerit points on your Nevada license. Driving less than 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit will result in one point and driving 11 to 20 miles per hour over the speed limit will result in two points. Additional charges, such as those for driving dangerously, can lead to as many as eight points on your license. You may also have to attend traffic school. If you accumulate 12 points, your license will be suspended or, in some cases, revoked. Due to the serious nature of speeding, you are unable to request record sealing until a year after your misdemeanor charge. If you decide to not fight the charges, you may face employment troubles and they will affect your life negatively in many other ways.

1. There was an emergency.
   Speeding during an emergency is a legally valid response. There may be a tornado, or another driver is threatening your safety, you may be rushing to the hospital, or have a medical problem while driving. 2. The officer made a mistake.
   Not every cop will try to get a ticket out of you. Sometimes they make genuine mistakes. Maybe they thought the speed limit was lower than it was, or their radar is calibrated wrong. 3. Prove Your Case.
   Take a note of the date and time you were pulled over by the officer. Check all conditions of the road, traffic, weather. Look around for road signs and what type of road you were on. Were you at an intersection? Was the road a hill or flat? Get as much detail as you possibly can from witnesses and take pictures of the road, including speed limit sign location. Maybe the speed limit sign was blocked by a tree branch or was knocked down. Also, remember to be calm and polite towards the officer. Police officers pull over hundreds of people a month. If you can be the least memorable person, the officer will likely not be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you were speeding.
